One vet suspected that she had had distemper shortly before arriving here, but another vet thinks she could have a tick-borne disease such as Lyme's Disease. In any event, she has been through the mill. Cricket's temperature was high enough that she had either one or possibly two seizures while in the hospital. There was a time when we thought the little girl wasn't going to pull through. But Cricket is nothing if not spunky and determined. Cricket had a followup veterinary appointment last week, so that we could do blood tests that can help determine whether she had distemper, or has one of four possible tick-borne diseases, or something else entirely. She walks up on her tip-toes, and keeps her legs straight as she walks. But one thing we can say for SURE, is that this girl feels MUCH BETTER now. Cricket is a DIFFERENT dog from the sad, sick little dog who was taken to the hospital. She's perky, happy, and has just a sparkling personality. ![]() ![]() JANUARY 2009 UPDATE: Cricket is in foster care, living with a beagle pack of brothers and sisters. She slides a little when running on slick surfaces such as tile, but nothing stops her from running around with the other dogs and enjoying herself. Cricket has shown herself to be VERY intelligent. Although she will never be able to compete or even run all of the obstacles involved in an agility course (such as jumps), she has learned how to navigate certain agility obstacles, and clearly enjoys doing so. We've also learned that where Cricket is concerned... where there's food, there's a way... Cricket has demonstrated ingenuity in obtaining extra snacks. Her new home will need to have a trashcan with a secure lid... and maybe a brick on top of the lid. Other than that, she is very well-behaved. The veterinarian has been unable to determine what Cricket's original illness was... they even did a spinal tap, but found nothing to confirm that she ever had distemper. She has epilepsy, walks on her toes with a stiff-legged gait. Cricket takes medication for seizures. She has had about 1/2 dozen seizures, with most of them being early in the process of her diagnostic tests. She doesn't lose control of any bodily functions or anything like that. She walks up to her foster mom and basically asks to sit on her lap when she is about to have a seizure... as if she wants to be comforted. Her seizure will last anywhere from seconds to minutes. She generally lies down for awhile after a seizure. She has had about 1/2 dozen seizures since she arrived at the start of September. She started seizure medications in November... she has not had a single seizure (knock wood) since the vet adjusted her medications (which are inexpensive) about a month ago. |
